In 1949, the Post Office plans to deliver city mail to Manteca

Since the town was incorporated, Maro Litchfield has served as city marshal up to the present time. He has offered his resignation from the position. Since the salary was too low, he resigned from the city trusteeship because he didn't like the office. The office will be filled by F. M. Roundtree, according to Mayor Joshua Cowell.

Last Thursday noon at the Hotel Manteca, A. H. Veith, former president of the Manteca Chamber of Commerce, handed over the gavel to his successor, F. Y. Kraft. As the outgoing president turned in his resignation letter, he thanked the directors and members for their loyalty and wished his successor the same.

 

An inspector has recommended to the department that Manteca be given city mail delivery, even though it has not yet been approved by the postal authority. The department has not yet advised Postmaster Luck to establish a delivery service, so no further information can be provided at this time.

 

The Board of Trustees discussed Monday night how to deal with the influx of new students in the elementary schools. Neil Hafley, superintendent, believes another school will be needed soon. It would be possible to get by without double sessions for one more year, but after that, more classrooms will be needed.

 

Saturday night at the MRPS Hall, the Jaycees 21 distinguished awards banquet presented two of the community's highest honors. Among those named Man of the Year was John Gatto, local manager of Bank of America. Outstanding Young Man of the Year was awarded to Duane Martin from McFall, Burnett and Martin.

 

According to its sponsoring committee, the John McFall Recognition dinner at St. Anthony's Parish Hall on Saturday night had the overtones and some of the campaign rhetoric of an old fashioned Democratic rally. Those in the audience who expected McFalls' homecoming and first public appearance since his defeat November 7 by now-Congressman Norman Shumway to be unsettling were wrong.

 

To widen and make safer the Highway 120 bypass, not just elected officials but the public will need to give their support and effort. It was the consensus of elected officials, bsiness owners, and local residents gathered at Carls Jr. urestaurant in Manteca to discuss ideas for securing more state funding for bypass improvements. For Manteca Unified School District, class size reduction and residential growth have become a double-edged sword. As portables are added, blacktop and playing field spaces are being lost at elementary schools since new sites are not available for their placement. District officials unanimously approved Tuesday a request for 12 portable classrooms for yet-undetermined elementary schools.

 

A near-record high in January is preparing California for a dry summer. According to early indications, January may be the driest month on record in the crucial Sierra watershed.
